Rabbi Isak Asiel has been leading the Jewish Community of Belgrade and Serbia for over 20 years. His role was instrumental in reestablishing the Ashkenazi Synagogue, the only one still in function in Belgrade. From the remaining, mostly secular community, he has strived towards creating a community whose members live in the traditional way. Shabbat and holiday services are held regularly. "There were times when a rabbi was not only with his wife in marriage, but also with the entire community," said Asiel referring to his work. With engaging lectures, humor and spontaneity he has moved a great number of young people towards re-discovering their Jewish identity. He represents one of the most vocal opponents to anti-Semitism.
